Is your small group or Sunday school class looking for Christmas Bible Studies? The Advent season is a time to get ready and prepare our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Doing a Christmas Bible Study is a chance to build up in anticipation of the grand event, and to dive deeper into the Scriptures and the Christmas story all month long. These Christmas Bible Studies by Max Lucado, Lee Strobel, Rick Warren, Ray VanderLaan, Rick McKinley, Chris Seay, and Greg Holder will help you put a focus on the birth of Christ and the Christmas message.

Time and time again in Scripture we are called to remember all that God has done for us and to not forget. One way we can slow down and do that is to continue to meet together in small group settings and center ourselves in Scripture. These Christmas Bible Studies you could plug-and-play with your small group — or even as a family — and reflect on what Christmas is and Who it is all about. Each study is relatively short, either three or four sessions each, and could be done on consecutive Sundays in December or as a family in the days leading up to Christmas.

Christmas Bible Study #1: Who Needs Christmas by Andy Stanley

Rediscover the improbable story of Christmas.

Four thousand years ago, God promised he would do something through the bloodline of Abraham. Two thousand years later, Jesus was born. And two thousand years after that, we’re still talking about it.

Why?

The story of Jesus’ birth was not what anyone expected: a baby . . . born in the armpit of the Mediterranean . . . to save us from sins that no one thought we needed saving from.

This Christmas season, join Andy Stanley as he unpacks why the improbability of the Christmas story is what makes it so believable. No one could have or would have made it up.

The Who Needs Christmas Study Guide includes session overviews, video teaching notes, discussion questions, personal reflection material, and a leader’s guide.

Sessions include:

  1. The Story Behind the Story
  2. The Author of Life
  3. The Message of Christmas
  4. Ready or Not . . . He Is Coming

Christmas Bible Study #2: The Case for Christmas by Lee Strobel

Even when he was an atheist, Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) enjoyed the Christmas season–the gift-giving, holiday parties, and being with friends and family. But after his wife became a Christian, Lee started to investigate the real meaning behind all those nativity scenes he had seen outside of churches. In this brand-new four-week study, Lee reveals what he discovered as he sought to separate the holiday from the holy day, the facts from the fantasy, and the truth from the tradition. In each session you will explore:

  • What the Bible actually says about Jesus’ birth and how you can know it is accurate
  • Whether the Christmas story actually happened or developed from the myths of the day
  • The Bible’s claim that Jesus was born of a virgin and why it is important to your faith
  • How Jesus–and only Jesus–fulfilled hundreds of biblical prophecies about the Messiah

The Case for Christmas will invite you to look beyond the familiar traditions of the season, challenge you to examine the evidence for yourself, and consider why Christmas really matters.

Christmas Bible Study #3: Because of Bethlehem by Max Lucado

A remarkable gift can arrive in an unremarkable package. No one expected God to come the way he did. Yet the way he came was every bit as important as the coming itself. The manger is the message. In this four-session video Bible study, you’ll explore how the One who made everything chose to make himself nothing for us. He experienced hunger and thirst. He went through the stages of human development. He was taught to walk, stand, and wash his face. He was completely and genuinely human. Because of Bethlehem, we no longer have marks on our record . . . just grace. We have the promise that God is always near us, always for us, always within us—and that we have a friend and Savior in heaven! This Christmas Bible study includes video discussion questions, Bible exploration, and personal study and reflection materials.

Christmas Bible Study #4: The Purpose of Christmas by Rick Warren

The Purpose of Christmas DVD Study for groups and families features three sessions taught by Rick Warren on why we celebrate Christmas and how it can change your life forever. At the very first Christmas – the birth of Jesus – an angel announced three things in which we find the three purposes of Christmas: it’s a time for celebration, for salvation, and for reconciliation.

Christmas Bible Study #5: Advent Conspiracy

The Advent Conspiracy by Rick McKinley, Chris Seay, and Greg Holder is a movement designed to help us all slow down and experience a Christmas worth remembering. But doing this means doing things a little differently. A little creatively. Through this engaging, four-session DVD you can substitute compassion for consumption by practicing four simple but powerful, countercultural concepts:

  • Worship Fully – because Christmas begins and ends with Jesus!
  • Spend Less – and free up resources for things that truly matter.
  • Give More – presence: helping hands, healing words, humble hearts.
  • Love All – the poor, the forgotten, the marginalized, the sick, in ways that make a difference.
