Week Four: Worried Sick

Week Four

Watch: The 3-minute video with Vicki

Study: Philippians 4:6-7

Read: Chapter 4 of Rest Assured

Verse of the Week

How do we gain this peace that Christ can provide? How do we maintain it? Philippians 4 holds the answer: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (vv. 6–7 NIV).

Remember it this way: Peace = Prayer + Petition + Praise.

Challenge of the Week

Are you a worrier?

This week, I want you to catch yourself every time you begin to worry about something and apply the antidote – immediately begin to PRAY. PETITION God, but end your petition with a declaration of, “Your will be done…” After that, close with a PRAISE, and then leave your worries in God’s care. Do this over and over again every time you begin to worry. If you want to break a bad habit, you must substitute the bad habit with a new one.

Discussion

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most, how much do you struggle with worry? Are you more of a selective worrier or a chronic, full- time worrier? What are some common causes that trigger a spin cycle of worry in your life? Share a recent example when God’s peace eluded you. How might it have helped you to employ God’s remedy: Peace = Prayer + Petition + Praise?
