Jesus Over Everything Week 4 — Remembering What’s True

Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. — Proverbs 8:33 NIV

WELCOME

Today we’re talking about the importance of not getting caught up in the hype or impulsivity of a culture that constantly wants to push us toward flashy, easy, bigger, and more. And here’s the hard truth: Christians are among the worst at buying into this kind of hype. We have a real penchant to outdo or one-up each other, or to heighten spiritual experiences to “out-experience the last thing we did,” all in the name of Jesus.

But it’s not just what we do to each other as Christians; it’s what we do in ourselves trying to fill a God-sized void. Everywhere we turn, we’re faced with opportunities to impulsively buy things we don’t need to fill spaces we don’t use. Many of us are so far into this way of living, we have no clue it’s even a problem. Hype pulls us out of the steady disciplines of long-term faithfulness and disrupts a life of wisdom devoted to God and only God.

When we anchor ourselves in the truth of who Jesus is and what the gospel is really about, we’re less tempted to give up so easily and have more courage to stay steady. Hype, the never-ending-vacuum of worldly knowledge, complicates our lives. Steadiness and wisdom uncomplicate our lives in a way our hearts truly crave. Let’s dig into this together.
