Mean Girls Don't Win

Song of Songs 4:7

You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you. — Song of Songs 4:7

We all know them. For that matter, we’ve already probably been one, even if just for a minute. A mean girl.

Mean girls say mean things. Mean girls use their words like bullets — they aim for your weakest spot, the place with the least armor, and shoot you. Right there.

I can still easily conjure up memories of rude and unnecessary things that other girls have said to me — about my body, my sports ability, my brain.

You name it, the mean girls know how to hurt, don’t they?

It reinforces what we already know — words give life or death. I wish I could tell you the magic way to make the words not hurt, or how to make a mean girl stop. But I don’t have those answers. Sorry.

Here’s what I will tell you:

If you are the one being mean, it is absolutely time to stop. Stop being insecure and finding your worth in making others feel bad.

My friend Manwell says that mean girls and bullies feel bad about themselves, so they are just looking to make everyone else feel bad too. Sad, but true. If that’s you, you are probably awesome; just remember that.

If you want to combat what the mean girls say (to you or your friends), I do have that trick. Ready?

Speak words of life.

You have the same power — just use it for good! Rescue with your words where others have tried to kill. Be encouraging. Be uplifting. Be the voice that heals. (Think about Proverbs 12:18.)

And remember — the mean girls don’t win in the end. Jesus wins. Every time.

TALK TO GOD

Dear God, forgive me for the times when I used my tongue to try to hurt someone else. Change my heart. I don’t want to be that girl. Give me words to encourage and lift up others. Help me to say the things that heal broken hearts and bring life.

REVOLT

Put some good words out there. Post a picture of you and one of your friends — or even more daring, someone you barely know! — on Instagram and write your favorite thing about her. Use the hashtag #SpeakLove.
