Unbridled Faith: Bringing Out the Best in Us

Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. — Romans 12:2 The Message

Show me your horse, and I’ll tell you who you are.

These special friends mirror us, exposing our true selves — warts and all. They sense when we’re happy or sad, at peace and in pain. They nuzzle their way into our hearts and help us work through our hang-ups. And as they help us see our true selves, they bring out the best in us.

If we let Him, God will bring out the best in us.

He, too, understands us and senses our pain and joy. He helps us work through our hang-ups and see our true selves — warts and all. Then, if we’re willing to surrender to Him, He molds us and makes us into the best version of ourselves, the selves He saw when He formed us. It’s not an easy path, this walk of faith. But it’s so worth it.

Our transformation begins with a crucial first step. If we’re to become more like Jesus — and the best “us” we can be — we must understand that life challenges don’t make us who we are; they reveal who we are. We can take what is revealed through our challenges and use that as an opportunity to point us in a new direction. And if we trust in God, the challenge will strengthen our faith.

Here’s a truth we would do well to plant deep in our hearts:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. — James 1:2-4

The hotter the fire, the purer the gold.

Lord, help me to see problems as opportunities to become more like Jesus. Bring out the best in me, amen.
